Academy of Improvising Strings

What to expect?
Three days of non-stop workshops, concerts and jams. You’ll work on improvisation, timing, phrasing, sound, expression, playing techniques and, if you’re a teacher yourself, how to incorporate improvisation in your teaching practice. Depending on your interest and level, you can spend more time on specific subjects with one or more teachers.

Who can apply?
All beginner, intermediate and advanced violinists, violists, cellists and double bass players between 14 and 84 years old, as well as teachers with an open minded approach to music and their instrument. Previous experience with improvisation is not required!

An intimate and relaxed course with the founders of Grappelli-Django Camp: Karin van Kooten, Reinier Voet and Tim Kliphuis. Guided ensembles, one-on-one time and lots of jamming help you put into practice all the principles you learnt during the Summer camp, or studied on by yourself at home. Catch up with the core of ‘family members’ who participate in every edition of the camp!

With the best gypsy jazz teachers and players such as Samson Schmitt, Fapy Lafertin, Fiona Monbet and Caroline Bugala, the Grappelli-Django Camp sells out each Summer.

Set up in 2010 by Tim Kliphuis and his colleagues Karin van Kooten (violin) and Reinier Voet (guitar), the camp welcomes participants from 25 different countries. It takes place the last weekend of August from Thursday to Sunday and is located 2 hours from Schiphol, in a beautiful old monastery in the middle of nowhere.

Grappelli-Django Camp features gypsy jazz star guest clinics, ensemble lessons, individual coaching, a teachers’ concert and jam sessions. The camp is open to those who play the violin, guitar, bass or other instruments at intermediate or advanced level, and improvisation levels vary from absolute beginner to advanced professionals.
